The Android Perspective: Cliff Note Version

Despite Apple’s successful launch of their 4th generation iPhone, 2010 is shaping up to be the year of Android.  According to Google’s Andy Rubin 160,000 Android devices are being activated worldwide each day.  That’s 2 activations per second.  Compare that to 60,000 activations in Feb and 100,000 they announced in May, and you can see just how fast Google’s free mobile OS is gaining momentum. The problem with such rapid growth is that consumers aren’t able to keep up.  Android devices are popping up faster than you can shake a stick at, and that means the average person can’t keep up with which device goes where.  Don’t worry we got your back.  Here’s a quick rundown of the last 8 months.  Cliff notes style.

iPhone 4 Wrapup

In case you haven’t heard, a little company called Apple unveiled a device called the iPhone 4 yesterday.   Even though  most of us already knew what the phone was going to look like, Steve Jobs was still able to create a sense of excitement and buzz which is a true testament to how well a speaker he truly is.  Enough with the hype lets get down the details:

Sprint HTC Evo 4G Review Roundup

The reviews are trickling in for Sprint and HTC’s newest “game changing” device the Evo 4G, and while most have positive things to say , the biggest complaints stem from spotty 4G coverage and battery life.  Nonetheless everyone loves the gigantic 4.3″ screen which blurs the line between smartphone and tablet.   The additional screen estate not only makes web pages come alive, but makes typing on HTC’s custom keyboard that much easier.  I have to say, Android is coming on very strong lately which’ll make Apple’s introduction of the iPhone on Monday very interesting.  In the end competition is good and it’s we the consumer who win.

Gizmodo:

“If you want the biggest, brawniest, most ridiculously muscular phone you can buy, it’s the Evo”

Android Central:

“The screen size, 4G data and promise of an upgrade to Android 2.2 make the Sprint Evo 4G the phone to beat:

Engadget:

“..This is truly one of the best smartphones ever made, and even spotty 4G — a reality of a young technology that’s going to take years to properly build out — probably won’t do much to hamper your enjoyment of this thing”

Cnet:

“The HTC Evo 4G is easily Sprint’s best smartphone and one of today’s top Android devices”

Google TV Lands

Now that Google is securely positioned on the desktop and mobile space, the company now wants to be on your television sets as well. During their keynote speech in San Francisco today, the Mt View based company stated the average American watches 5 hours of TV a day, meaning the potential adsense revenue has them salivating at the mouth. Remember Google is an advertising company after all.

5 Reasons to Wait on the iPad

On Saturday afternoon I stopped by the Apple store on Bay Street in Emeryville, CA to check out the iPad.  Outside there were 2 lines. One line was for people who wanted a “demo” or needed anything else in the store.  The other line was for people “ready to buy”.  As a steady stream of customers walked out the door (most of which were carrying white bags) they were met with cheers and applause from store employees as if they were celebrities.  At this point I was intrigued.  I normally walk away in situations like this but the fact Apple had a line just to see the device I admit, made it incredibly desirable.   Make no mistake.   This is a deliberate and carefully orchestrated marketing campaign from the king of all hype machines.  Flashbacks of the Cabbage Patch doll craze during the 80′s flashed in my mind.  It didn’t matter what they were selling.  The atmosphere plus the fear of running out hits the buy switch in people’s minds.  Luckily for me the line was short and I eventually got a demo of the iPad from a kid who looked way too young to work there.  What did I think?  The product is exactly as I expected and no more.  As someone who loves gadgets I can definitely see myself using it.   However it’s not attached to something I need every day (say a phone) and therefore I consider it purely a luxury device, and for such devices I always wait.  Here’s 5 reasons why you should too:

Apple Showing Off iPhone OS4 on Thursday April 8th

Thats right folks.  On Thursday April 8th Apple will give a sneak peak of it’s new iPhone operating system.  Our guess is the overall UI will remain the same, but hopefully features such as multitasking will finally become a reality.  Since the iPad, which runs the iPhone operating system, just came out this week we’re wondering if these new features will be included in the new device as well.  The timing seems a bit off.  Anyway our questions will be answered in 4 short days.

Netflix and ABC Streaming Coming to the iPad?

This story hasn’t been 100% confirmed yet, but several sources are reporting Apple’s upcoming iPad will stream Netflix and TV shows from ABC out of the box. If these leaked photos are real  the much hyped slate device already has a killer app and live up to it’s reputation as a content consumption device.  Very interesting indeed.

UPDATE:  The App is now official.

Google Nexus One Suddenly Available on AT&T

Without warning Google’s new Android smartphone can now be purchased on AT&T’s GSM network putting it literally head to head with the iPhone.  So if you’re already on AT&T and have $529 bucks to burn go ahead and give it a try.

Netflix Announced for Windows Mobile 7

Windows 7 might have its first killer app months before its “late 2010″ release.  During the MIX10 conference today, Microsoft today showed off the first official Netflix application.  If you’re thinking this app is nothing more than a queue re-arranger you’re wrong.  How about streaming access to Netflix Watch Instantly through silverlight.  Wow cool stuff and it really shows off the power of the platform as whole.

Zune Gets It’s Facebook On

For that 1% of the anti-ipod population who chose to go with Zune HD you now have a Facebook app.  Yes its free, and yes there’s no advertising. To download it, check out the Zune marketplace.

Redeye Turns Your Ipad Into a Control Freak

I’m usually not a fan of touch screen remotes because they require both retinas along with your fingers to operate, but this little app from Redeye is intriguing.  It requires the use of an IR transmitter that plugs into the headphone jack that sends programmable commands just like a Harmony would.  The app gives you access to a database of stored codes but you could also have it learn unknown codes as well.  Pretty neat.  The best part?  The IR dongle is only $49 MSRP and the software is FREE.

The software also allows the use of macros such as “Watch TV” which will automatically turn on your TV, cable box and select the right input. You can even program the shake gesture to turn off the TV when your wife is watching Dancing with the Stars.  We guessed the iPad would be a huge hit as a home automation device and programs such as these reinforce our predictions.

Who Will Use the iPad?

Now that a week has gone by since our initial disappointment of Apple’s tablet device,  and after listening to countless discussions about how Apple’s blown it, I’ve come to a few conclusions .  First there was no way Apple could have possibly lived up to expectations. In many ways the iPad has become the victim of it’s own hype.  If the tablet rumor was never officially leaked, I wonder what people’s reactions might have been. Secondly there IS a market for a device like this, although nobody knows how large it is.  I can see those utilizing home automation software on the ipod/iphone jumping to this device,  allowing them to see an entire outline of their home on a single screen.  I can see someone replacing their Amazon Kindle for a full color Apple tablet that allows them to check email and browse the web.  I can see gadget-geeks buying it simply because it looks cool.  How many of these people are willing to shell out at least $499 remains to be seen but nobody can doubt the potential in a device like this is huge. Right now people point to the lack of Adobe Flash and multitasking as huge minuses, but once those workarounds come into place like HTML 5 and H264 streaming the iPad makes for a compelling device.  It might not gain real market share until these problems get addressed along with a price drops, but neither did the ipod or iphone either.  Until then we’re going to pass on the iPad and continue to watch it’s development which should be an interesting story indeed.

Just Another Apple Tablet Prediction

With Apple’s much rumored “tablet” announcement just 2 days away online hype is at a feverish pitch.   So high in fact, there’s a good chance that whatever is unveiled on Wednesday will be a huge disappointment.  What’s interesting to me is everyones so focused on the hardware side, they could be missing the real story which is content deals.  There’s no doubt Apple’s tablet WILL be a beautiful piece of hardware but without good content it’s about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.  So what kind of  deals can we expect? For one expect magazine and newspaper subscriptions to jump on board making full use a gorgeous OLED display. For movies and television content you have to remember Steve Jobs is closely tied with Disney and Netflix’s recent fallout with the Micky Mouse company is suspicious timing.  A subscription based all-you-can-eat service would be killer and could potentially make this tablet (and the Apple TV) compelling.  Bottom line is Jobs wants this tablet to do for video what the ipod did for music.   Whether or not this device will succeed will depend largely on the content and whether or not Apple has the clout to give people what they want.

Our Predictions for Wed:

Tablet:

9-11″ OLED screen, built in camera, multi-touch display with new gestures, WIFI, possibly include Intel’s new Wireless Display Technology. $599 price.  New Apps and Groundbreaking content deals.

iphone 4.0:

Updated gestures found in the tablet added in OS4.  Background apps finally a reality but limited to a handful at a time.   Verizon Announcement.

Macbook

Minor update including I5 CPU’s

ipod Touch:

Camera

Ready for Google Goggles?

If you haven’t heard of Google Goggles (haha) prepare to be amazed.  Take a picture of something with your Android phone say a book, business card, logo or places and get instant search results. Google says the technology can be used for face recognition although they won’t be doing that anytime soon.  Imagine the privacy implications here.  See a hot chick?  Take her picture and pull her up her facebook page.  Um yeah.

Motorola DROID: Time Magazine’s Gadget of the Year

Motorola went from obscurity to major player in a single device with the Droid smartphone.  Powered by Google’s latest open source operating system Android 2.0, the Droid received positive reviews, but none bigger than Time Magazine’s gadget of the year.  Congratulations!
