Windows Home Server: What Is It, and Why You Need One

Whenever I get a call from a customer regarding a broken workstation the first thing I always ask is “Do you have a backup?”  About 99% of the time the answer is no.  Truth is most people don’t consider a backup solution until they’ve already lost precious data. I can’t stress how important it is to keep current backups in case of accidental data loss, spyware / virus infections or hard drive failures. We’re all busy these days and let’s be honest, backup is something we don’t often think about.  For those people a Windows Home Server is just for you.

When did Firefox become the new IE?

Firefox can cause overheating problems on some laptops according to a documented Mozilla support page.  Oh boy.  Remember all the things we liked about FF when it was released 6 years ago?  It was light, fast and secure by obscurity when compared to Microsoft’s almighty Internet Explorer. Funny things happen in the browser market.  With each passing version FF has gotten fatter and fatter, eventually growing into another IE itself.  This recent news about overheating problems are only going to make things worse.  In all fairness to Mozilla, the problem is mostly on ultra-portable laptops such as the Macbook Air and Dell Adamo because they often sacrifice heat dissipation for packaging.  But other browsers such as Google Chrome and Apple Safari have no problems on these laptops.   Go figure.

Windows 7. The real Mojave project?

Anandtech put together a comprehensive Windows 7 performance guide and the results are interesting to say the least.  While 7 is bring touted in the press like Tom Brady, turns out its only marginally faster than Vista.  Those in the industry can’t be too surprised since much of 7′s architecture is based on Vista.  Speed aside, there are plenty of reasons to upgrade, or if you’re like most people 7 will be pre-installed with your next computer.
