HT Mag raves about the Onkyo NR-5008 AVR, gives perfect score

As someone who loves their Onkyo TX-SR876 receiver, I’m delighted to see Home Theater Mag rave about the current model NR-5008 in its latest January issue.  AVR’s are tremendously complicated pieces of equipment and the 5008′s spec sheet is dazzling featuring 140wpc, THX Ultra 2 certification, HQV Reon video processing,  and streaming internet radio.  The key differentiator according to the reviewer, is it’s lively sound quality and ease of use.  I’ve played with many receivers and can safely say that Onkyo AVR’s are indeed the most user friendly out there.    The 5008 is not cheap, but if you’re in the market for a top shelf AVR, the 5008 needs to be on your short list.

Oppo BDP-95 curiously listed for presale on e-commerce site

Oppo’s upcoming audiophile version of the BDP-93 blu-ray player hasn’t been announced yet, but that didn’t stop Music direct from listing it on their most recent catalog and web site.  Listed as the BDP-95, the upcoming player features an ESS Sabre DAC, upgraded power supply with a large toroidal transformer, and balanced stereo outputs.  Price is $979 with a release date of Q1 2011.  You’ll also notice slightly different styling cues compared to the BDP-95.  So far looks like a worthy replacement to the BDP-83SE and we can’t wait to get our hands on one.

Vudu movie service arrives on the PS3

The PS3 is really coming on strong with streaming options lately.  First there was Sony’s own movie rental service followed by Netlifx, Hulu Plus and now Vudu, a pay per view service featuring exclusive 1080p HDX video and Dolby Digital 5.1 Plus, making it the videophiles choice if there is such a thing in the streaming world.   Unlike Netflix many of the titles are available on the same day they’re released on DVD.  Head on over to the movie section on the XMB and browse to your hearts content.

Apple TV (4.1) and iPad (4.2) updates hit today!

Looks like the iPad isn’t the only device getting an update today.  Apple is also pushing out a 4.1 update for the current Apple TV enabling it’s long awaited airplay video feature.  Stay tuned for a mini review!

Sonos S5 Review

Apple’s announcement about the Beatles heading to iTunes is significant because it clears the final hurdle in the acceptance of digital music. Digital is now the overwhelming method for music delivery and it’s changing the way we use our stereo equipment.  Gone are the huge rack stereo systems your father had, or the Aiwa mini system you rocked in college.  Say hello to internet connected stereos with minimal to no buttons, all controlled via portable touch device. Say hello to the Sonos S5.

Oppo BDP-93 Blu-ray player specs get detailed on Oppo’s site

The much anticipated Oppo BDP-83 universal blu-ray player which was previewed by Audioholics during CEDIA 2010 is now prominently featured on Oppo’s web site.  Back then we knew little about this player besides the fact it would feature  Netflix, 3D, built in WIFI, dual HDMI outputs and possibly Marvel’s latest Qdeo video processing.  All of those features are now confirmed including Blockbuster Video on Demand.  Unfortunately no mention of Pandora anywhere.  The $499 BDP-93 will also have RS232 thrown in and eSATA port for connecting an external hard drive for media.  The entire package weighs in a shade over 10 lbs just like it’s predecessor.  All in all a solid package in our view, and if the video processing is anywhere near the 83 in terms of de-interlacing and scaling looks like Oppo has another hit on their hands.  The line starts right here.

Review: XMB Netflix for PS3

PS3 owners got a nice gift yesterday when the much anticipated XMB integrated Netflix application became available for download, promising full 1080p resolution,  5.1 Dolby Digital and Subtitles on select titles.  I’ll be honest the PS3 has not been my goto Netflix player only because it’s rather noisy and hot.  This latest update changes everything.

Why Google TV is not ready for mainstream

Announcements have come and gone from Logitech and Sony regarding their upcoming Google TV products and here’s what we know so far. Logitech’s $299 Revue set top box includes a full sized keyboard and touch pad, which through RF and subsequently IR, control all of your home theater components as well as bring the internet to your TV through Google TV.  GTV’s partners at launch include Netflix (no surprise), HBO, NBC, Turner, Amazon, NBA and others.  Sony is integrating GTV into their Bravia HDTV’s and at least 1 blu-ray player that will sell for $399.

Round 1: Apple TV vs Roku XD

The question I get asked  most (besides when the iPhone is coming to Verizon) is which set top streaming box should I get?  These are interesting times as more and more content becomes available online many are looking to ditch their pricey cable TV subscriptions.  Until the Google TV and Boxee Box arrive later this fall (at a much higher price point) the current top contenders are the Roku and new Apple TV.  Both are under $100 but which offers the best bang for the buck?  As you’ll find out in this review the answer is not exactly clear cut.  In fact one could argue they’re very different devices.

PS3 integrates Netflix, adds 1080p and Dolby Digital 5.1

The PS3 has long been the most future proof Blu-ray player you can buy.  Since it’s introduction over 3 years ago its received updates for DTS-HD MA decoding, Adobe Flash and 3D.   Now Netflix is coming straight to the XMB interface and adding a few competitive advantages including 1080p resolution (up from 720p), subtitles and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.

Netflix sends emails asking “How was the video quality for<movie>” but they never asked me how the audio was.  I always believed the crappy compressed 2 channel stereo was the bane of Netflix instant watch, so I’m thrilled to see them finally address the audio side of things.   Good on them.

Emotiva UPA-5 5 Channel Amplifier: $429 Free Shipping (Update: OOS)

Frankly there are few smart long-term investments when it comes to Home Theater.  TV technology rapidly progresses and media formats come and go,  but amplification like a good scarf never go out of style.   Invest in good amplification and keep it for 5, 10 even 20 years.  Emotiva is an up and coming internet brand thats known for delivering shockingly good performance for the price.  Their UPA5 is a solid 5 channel amp that delivers 125wpc (all driven) at 8ohms.  Normally it’s a great deal at $549, but at $399 free shipping and no tax (to CA) it’s a KILLER DEAL.

Update: Looks like the amp is temporarily out of stock.  Hope you ordered yours in time!

Update2: More coming.  Price bumped to $429 which is still terrific.

Update3: Out of stock!

Pioneer BDP-51FD FW 1.68a Leaks!

It’s nice to see Pioneer still working on older blu-ray player firmware updates.  We’ve just got our hands on a leaked version of 1.68a.  The changes are still unclear of this time, and while it doesn’t seem to add speed to this notoriously slow player, it could potentially alleviate future compatibility problems.  However it’s important to  note this is NOT an official release so update at your own risk!
